Week 14 News

This Week
This week our theme was nutrition. On Monday we talked about what foods are healthy and unhealthy. We cut out magazine pictures of food and sorted them into the two different groups. Tuesday we learned about MyPlate.  MyPlate is a guide to help students  make good eating choices. It shows the different food groups and how much we should be eating daily. We used a paper plate and magazine pictures to create our own healthy meals. Wednesday we learned that eating healthy is important to keep our internal organs functioning correctly. Our buddy class came and helped us make a life size picture of our insides. Thursday we read It Looked Like Spilt Milk and made our own version of the book. Friday we read Stone Soup and practiced recalling the beginning, middle and ending of the story.

Good News
Our class has received 750 C.A.T.S. cards

Family Trees
Today we are sending home a tree that your child made. On Monday, November 26th we will be starting our family unit. I would like all the students to use the tree to make a family tree using pictures of their immediate family. The students will share these trees with the class and we will display them in the hallway. At the end of the month the tree will be put in your child's  memory book so you will not get the pictures back until the end of the year.

Weather
The weather is changing and the mornings are getting colder. Please be sure to send coats, gloves, and hats with your child. The playground can be very windy and cold.

Week 13 News

This week our theme was air and water. We discussed what we use water for and why it is important. On Thursday we learned water is made out of hydrogen and oxygen. We made water molecules out of model magic and straws. We also discovered that water has surface tension. We experimented how many water drops we can put on a quarter, nickel, dime and penny.

Thank you for turning in your turkeys so quickly. This class is very creative. The turkeys are displayed in our hallway and we get lots of comments about how great they look.

Week 12 News

This Week

This week our theme was monsters. Some of the books we enjoyed this week were Go Away Big Green Monster, The Little Old Monster, and Where the Wild Things Are. We had a very fun time making a monster glyph, designing our own wild things and eating cookies just like the Cookie Monster. The students made a color monster book where they were able to mix primary colors to make secondary colors. They all loved getting their fingers dirty as they mixed the colors.

Fall Party

Thank you to all the parents who came to the party. The kids had a great time playing games and eating their snacks.
In December we will be having another Holiday party. During the party we will be building gingerbread houses. If you don't want to eat all your Halloween candy please save it for the party. The Halloween hard candies work great to decorate the houses. Thank you!

Week 11

This week our theme was skeletons. Monday we started our skeleton theme by learning what foods are important and how to keep our bones healthy. Tuesday we learned some fun facts about skeletons by reading Bones by Steven Jenkins. We then built a skeleton out of q-tips.  On Wednesday we used pipe cleaners and pasta to build our backbone. We then demonstrated what our vertebrae looks like when we sit down, stand up or do somersaults. Thursday we practiced recalling facts and made a fact book about bones. Today we played Roll-A-Skeleton. We cut apart the skeleton in six different pieces and used a dice to put it back together.

The cold weather is here! Our school policy is that students will have outdoor recess unless the windchill is under 20 degrees. Please be sure to bundle your children up. The wind can be very strong and COLD on our playground.
It is getting closer and closer to December and in our school we have a special rule that we don't tie shoes after the Winter break. So.... please start helping your child learn how to tie his/her shoes.

Thank you to all the parents who are reinforcing our classroom behavior chart at home. I have heard a lot of talk about special treats and rewards if students come home with a certain color. I just wanted to remind parents that the behavior chart is only one type of positive reinforcement we do in my classroom. I try to keep the Outstanding Red as a very special level. We also reinforce good behavior with treats, treasures, C.A.T.S. cards and verbal praises.

In science we continued our unit on properties. This week we did a few experiments to show liquid takes the shape of its container and that gas takes up space. We also learned what objects float and sink and which ones are magnetic.

We had a great Red Ribbon week. Thanks for helping your child dress up to support our Student Council celebrate Drug Free week.

Reading is a "hole" lot of Fun!
Here we are celebrating reading and enjoying our doughnut holes.
